From Between Trio
is a collaboration of three musicians from three
continents: Tatsuya Nakatani, born and raised in Japan, now living in
the US; Michel Doneda, from France; and Jack Wright, from the US.
This has evolved, as do most such international groupings, through the
touring efforts of the players, the search for new musical experience
and partners (which is often the same thing). It is a story of each player
finding, by chance meeting and by intention, those others who will create
just the right musical challenge and chemistry, then taking it further.
Jack and Michel met and first played together in Toulouse, where percussionist
Le Quan Ninh had invited them to perform in the fall 2002. Then in May
of 2003 Michel came to the US for the Festival Musique Actuelle in Victoriaville,
Canada, and the two of them toured in the Northeast. They met up with
Tatsuya, then living in the Bronx, with whom Jack had been playing for
several years and they were thrilled by the results. Daniel Yang heard
the recording of their session and attended a NY performance, and was
inspired by their music to create a label in order to present this music.
That label is SOS Editions, and the recordings ended up as From Between,
which then became the name of the group. A second CD was released in Jan.
2006 as again the first CD on a new label, Sprout: No Stranger to Air;
this is a recording of the trio concert in Le Havre, France the previous
year. They are now planning their fourth tour, which will take them through
the Midwest and East Coast, where audiences and presenters have unanimously
encouraged a return.
